Dear Honey Run Friends,
Reading is one of the most enjoyable and fulfilling uses of my spare time. Unfortunately, I have been so preoccupied with work over the last few years I have failed to allow myself the time to partake in this relaxing diversion. This summer I began setting aside more time to sit outside and enjoy the quiet surroundings where I am blessed to reside at Honey Run, and read. I find that reading opens me to new thoughts, and helps me gain new perspectives, or at least revisit previous ones; it slows me down and forces me to contemplate the writer’s opinion. In a day and age where video and photographs are used everywhere we turn, my imagination is not afforded the chance to awaken. But with an author’s detailed description in a book I must participate in creating the visual image with my own mind while applying the proper context. I find this exercise rewarding and calming to my soul while broadening my awareness.
I watch so many of you seek out your favorite reading nook on the property. Some of you take your book and hike to the top of the hill to read among the prairie grass and the cool breeze, while others prefer the shaded sanctuary down by the creek to enjoy our sitting area that affords you the soothing sound of the trickling creek in the background as you are swept away into your literary escape. Or you may be one of our hibernating guests who disappear to their private room retreat for a week in the honeycombs curled up by the fire or lounging on their patio soaking in the latest installment from your favorite author. The reading oases at Honey Run are only limited by personal preferences. I am encouraged and inspired that so many of you have found this balance in life to slow down and read. I pray that I will keep the discipline to make this a regular part of my life regardless of the distractions and appreciate the time spent lost in this dying art.
I am always excited when I hear from one of our visiting writers that they were able to find their inspiration while visiting Honey Run. What an amazing setting that is found here where the written word is not only consumed but created. Honey run is truly a literary lover’s paradise. I hope you have the opportunity to spend some time with us soon and enjoy the gift of quiet and a good book.
