Did You Know We’re An Ohio Bluebird Habitat?

Posted on April 13, 2015
in Around the Inn, Garden Blog

We have plenty of reasons to celebrate the dawning of spring here in Holmes County, Ohio but one of the best perks of the warmer weather is the birdwatching we can do all over the grounds. Ohio is home to more than 400 documented species of birds and most of those can be found right here at Honey Run. By far one of our favorites is the Eastern Bluebird, which makes its nest at this time of year and sticks around all summer long to sing for us and our guests. We’re a registered protected habitat for these beautiful creatures and love to share them with our appreciative guests.

The Inn at Honey Run currently boasts 12 specialty nesting boxes designed to attract and house these bluebirds and when we checked this morning, 5 of them are currently active by expectant mother birds.  The birds aren’t confined to the bluebird nesting boxes however.  The photo above shows a female nesting in an old Downy Woodpecker hole ‘drilled’ last year.

As a proud member of the Ohio Bluebird Society and a friend to birdwatchers everywhere, we encourage you to bring your binoculars and come check out the hundreds of birds nesting across the property. The birdsong in the air is truly something beautiful and you don’t want to miss it.

    Hi Jason-

My wife and I are staying at Honey Run this weekend. Besides the Bluebirds (I’ve never seen them live), what other species will we be able to see during our stay? Is it “Owl season” (if such a thing exists)?

    Thanks,

    Scott

      Hi Scott,

We have over 100 different species of birds across the property. Those most viewed from the Inn’s windows are the Pileated & Downy Woodpeckers, Wrens, Nuthatches’, Finches, and Chickadees. Though you can hear Barred & Great Horned Owls from various spots on the property, they are often hard to spot. Our Yellow Trail that runs along the Honey Run stream is the best place to seek them out. See you this weekend!

    Jason-

Thanks for the reply, we’re really looking forward to our visit and some Owl-spotting!
