July tips and tasks for the garden
- Provide birds with a fresh water source in the garden
- Deadheading (removing spent flowers) of annual and perennial plants will encourage re-bloom throughout summer and into fall. Pay close attention the plants listed below:
Annuals: geraniums, marigolds, older petunia varieties, nemesia, zinnias
Perennials: daylilies, daisies, dianthus, perennial salvia, black eyed susan, coreopsis, hardy geraniums
- Newly planted trees and shrubs should be watered thoroughly. Any watering (containers, turf, and/or plants) is best done in the morning to allow drying and reduce disease chances.
- Fertilize container plants every two weeks
- July pests and problems to monitor in the landscape include:
- Powdery mildew of garden phlox and lilac
- Aster yellows
- Iris Borer
- Black spot of rose, rose rosette disease, rose sawfly
- Spider mites
- Grubs in the lawn
- Blossom end rot of pepper, tomato, and cucurbits
- Fall webworm
- Japanese beetles
- Bagworms
