Letter From Jason — Building the Honey Run Arts Culture

Posted on October 2, 2014
in Around the Inn, Letters from Jason, Newsletter Content

Dear Honey Run Friends,

What is art to you? Is it a painting, photograph, or sculpture? Is it a film or a score of music? Is it an actor miming on the street or a contemporary building built into the natural landscape on a hill in Holmes County? Is it a colorfully constructed meal highlighting all of your senses or a landscape view of a botanical masterpiece? If any of these draw out an emotional response or thought for you, then yes, it is art.

The Oxford English Dictionary defines art as, “the expression or application of human creative skill and imagination, typically in a visual form such as painting or sculpture, producing works to be appreciated primarily for their beauty or emotional power.”

Art in many different genres has always brought a sense of excitement and curiosity to me. The lasting impression that art instills in me is that it is our attempt to mirror our Creator in expressive creation. Art makes you think, wonder, and allows you to get lost in the work itself. I always seek to understand the artist’s story behind the work so I can walk for just a moment in their shoes as they were birthing their creation.

The Inn at Honey Run has been intertwined with art from its inception. We have displayed quilt art, held music and theater symposiums, housed small theatrical performances, created a stage for live music, been the temporary home for countless painters and writers to work on their craft, and practiced our own culinary arts in the kitchen. The stage is now set for Honey Run to continue its growth into art appreciation and create a permanent exhibit on the grounds.

We will publicly announce our plans over the next couple of months for an exciting year in 2015, when we will be building an open-air art museum. We’ll add original artwork on exhibit throughout our facility. The project will feature locally made quilt art, an art film festival, a living labyrinth that will be made of naturally-occurring flowers (only allowing the labyrinth a short window of existence each year), and we will be adding several packages that will allow your artistic self to participate in this movement.

I have dreamed of this day since I first walked onto the grounds of Honey Run six years ago and saw a fifty-four acre canvas waiting to blend our natural blessings with the creativity and creations that are within the local artists. This new era of Honey Run will complement the serenity and beauty that already exist here, giving our friends and guests another outlet to expand their minds and center their souls while creating a new Honey Run experience.

I hope you are as excited as I am about the integration of art into our boutique resort. I hope you are able to join us on this journey and experience this vision coming to life over the coming months. The canvas of Honey Run is stretched and ready for you to visit this living work of art and to have your spirit moved.

Your fellow art and life enthusiast,
Jason

    Jason,
I have a passion for art and Spirituality. I am inspired by your reflections on Honey Run as a stretched canvas. Beautiful. I wonder if we might all begin to see church as a canvas as well.

Much a pleasure to meet you during our staff retreat and wonderful to visit your beautiful church.

    Blessings.

      Hi Mary,

That project is still a plan for the future but hasn’t been completed yet. Thanks for checking in!
