Snowy Adventures: Six Winter Things to Do in Berlin Ohio

Posted on December 15, 2014
in About Amish Country, Around the Inn, Things to Do

The air is crisp and quiet and the fields of Amish Country sparkle with fresh white flakes — winter is here, and even with the mercury dipping below freezing, you’ll find plenty of things to do in Berlin, Ohio, a popular Amish Country attraction located just ten minutes down the road from The Inn at Honey Run. Here are six of our favorites to get you started.

Sleigh Rides at Walnut Creek
Sleight Rides at Walnut Creek

Snowy sleigh rides. Catch a ride through the brisk wintry weather at the Farm at Walnut Creek. This 120 acre farm is home to more than 500 different animals, including exotic creatures like zebra and kangaroo. Feed them by hand and glide across the landscape on an hourlong sleigh ride. Reservations are required so your hosts can get their trusty steeds ready to trot.

Glide around Malabar Farm State Park. Add some nordic skiing to your itinerary. Located about 45 minutes from Honey Run, Malabar Farm State Park is a great place to stretch your legs on the way to or from your getaway, or for a longer day trip. Activities include cross country skiing, ice skating, sledding, and mansion tours. Bring your own equipment and glide across the snow to your heart’s content.

Strap on your snowshoes. Step into the solitude of our forests and fields on the Honey Run walking trails. For a longer excursion, check out the Holmes County Trail: 15 miles of gorgeous, easygoing rail trail. You’ll need your own equipment, boots, and snowshoes.

It’s shopping weather. Amish Country’s artisans and craftsman, with their shops and home studios, have all kinds of handmade goods to offer. Take a spin around town in search of basketmakers, quiltmakers, and more. Discover the legendary quality of Amish furniture and finish your shopping trip off with a treat — tasty morsels abound, including fry pies, chocolates, and other local specialities.

Master the museums. Stay warm indoors and take a trip back in time one at any of the area’s three lovely museums. The Warther Museum is dedicated to the life and work of Ernest “Mooney” Warther, a master carver known for fascinatingly intricate model trains. In Roscoe Village, history comes to life in a series of shops all outfitted for the 19th century. Last but not least, spend an afternoon at the Victorian House Museum. With 28 rooms, there is plenty to see in this collection of Victoriana and Holmes County history. Visit all three and become a museum master.

Just relax. We know it’s cold outside — curl up with a book by the fire or have a stay in for a movie night with someone special. Keep an eye on the windows no matter where in the Inn you find yourself — chances are, you’ll spy a bird stopping in for a winter treat. Our holiday tree on the Tarragon Terrace, the Birding Tree, draws all kinds of visitors with its handmade, treat-filled ornaments.

Lace up those boots and flip the calendar to winter with confidence — as the holiday bustle comes and goes, we hope you can find some time to escape from the world and enjoy nature’s simple pleasures.

Yes, Berlin does host an annual Christmas in Berlin Nativity parade, usually around Thanksgiving. This year, it was on the Friday after Thanksgiving, November 28. You can see some photos here!
