Letter from Jason – June 2021

Dear Honey Run Friends,

The weather we have been experiencing for the past couple of weeks has revived my love for daytime car trips. With the sun beaming down on me, I open the sunroof, roll down the windows, crank up the music from my playlist, and cruise the county roads of Ohio. I absolutely love driving on Ohio’s backroads. As spring is in full bloom all the vegetation is lush as it climbs out of its winter slumber. The creeks are full from the spring rains, and the farms are bustling with young offspring that were recently brought into this world. It is so peaceful watching the countryside pass through the windshield of my car as my mind is not consumed with any worries of the day. No schedule, no phone calls, no emails, no demands – just me and the open road. The more remote the road, the happier I am.

The terrain in Ohio varies tremendously depending on your location. I have found beauty in the flat plains of west Ohio, as well as the hills of east Ohio. On the plains it is incredible to see the sky just dominate the landscape as I pass farm after farm with wide open pastures separated by a tree fence line. In east Ohio, the roads get curvy, and many have a canopy of trees over top blocking the sky but bringing the forest growth front and center with farms scattered amongst the vegetation.

My love for car rides I think is an inherited passion. My father enjoys a good car trip, and when I was in the sixth grade, I had surgery that required me to not be physical (as normal kids are) for six weeks. To entertain me, my dad and I grabbed the Ohio atlas and went for a Saturday drive. We did this for several weeks, and it was thrilling. We sought after covered bridges with me as the navigator telling him what turns to make. It was a hunt on some old dirt roads, but when we found our prize, it was a magnificent view of wood craftsmanship from a previous era spanning the creek and allowing the movement of vehicles over this natural barrier. This cemented my love for covered bridges and discovering the backroads of Ohio.

I hope you have some time this spring or summer to let your hair blow in the wind, get off the interstate, and explore the natural beauty of the Ohio landscape. There is countless treasure to see. One of the benefits of The Inn at Honey Run is you can take multiple routes along these byways and enjoy the scenic drive. Or if you are a history buff and want to travel Ohio’s first state route, it is found here in Holmes County. Enjoy the adventure!

Your daytrip-driving enthusiast Innkeeper,

Jason
