Things to Do and See in Downtown Millersburg Ohio

Posted on October 14, 2014
in About Amish Country, Around the Inn, Things to Do

Did you know that downtown Millersburg is only a little over 3 miles from The Inn at Honey Run? While blog posts usually relish in the idyllic Amish countryside that surrounds the Inn, today the focus is on Millersburg, Ohio, a quaint town with plenty to see and do. First, a little history of the town.

Millersburg, Ohio — A Rich History

Now, Millersburg is home to about 3,000 residents, but it had much humbler beginnings in 1815, when Adam Johnson and Charles Miller established what is now Old Town Millersburg. It had a slow start, and in 1824 the two founders filed a new plan for New Town, where Millersburg is located today. When Millersburg was accepted as the county seat of the newly formed Holmes County it finally began to prosper. The Village of Millersburg was then officially founded in 1865. There are lots of things to keep busy with in Millersburg — here are a few of the most popular.

Shop, Eat, and Do in Millersburg Ohio

1. Shop Til’ You Drop. Downtown Millersburg is home to boutiques and specialty stores where all sorts of home items, gifts and more can be found. A few favorites? Grab a new or used book at Bookworms. Look but don’t touch at Millersburg Glass and Collectibles. Take a step back in time at other Millersburg shops: Pioneer Loft, Starlight Antiques, Village Antique Emporium, or All Things Retro — all sell vintage, antique, and period home furnishings and decor.

2. Dine and Drink. Mama Bear’s Coffee supplies much needed caffeine to fuel shopping, furniture hunting, or touring. Become immersed in the history of Millersburg, OH at The Tavern at Hotel Millersburg, whose walls are full of historic photos and artwork. Or, relax with a brew at Bag’s Sports Pub or Millersburg Brewing Company where brewmaster Marty Lindon uses locally harvested grains to produce top-notch IPAs.

3. Just DO it! Take a tour of the historic Holmes County Jail constructed in 1886 (make arrangements by calling 330-674-3955). Learn about the local glass plant and its owner John Fenton at the Millersburg Glass Museum. Revel in the Queen Anne Architecture of the Victorian House Museum. With 28 rooms, all lavishly decorated, this is a sight to see.

Love the outdoors? Enjoy a walk, bike, or buggy ride across 12 miles of the only dual purpose trail in the United States, half of it consisting of chipped limestone for horse traffic. You can jump on the trail just off of Grant Street at the historic Trail Depot in Millersburg, Ohio. Bicycles are readily available for rent.

While planning a weekend getaway, don’t forget that Sundays in Downtown Millersburg can be sparse, so plan activities there on Friday or Saturday and fill Sunday with bird watching, hiking, or other area activities. If you need some ideas, check out some of our previous posts:

Love your accurate representation of the wonderful things to do in downtown Millersburg! Hope to see some of you visit the ‘Holidays at the Mansion’ at the Victorian House this season.
