Letter from Jason – October 2019

Posted on September 30, 2019
in Letters from Jason, Seasonal

Dear Friends of Honey Run,

Some see autumn as a time of death, the end of the growing season, a time for plants to retreat before the winter slumber. Others see autumn as a renewal period. An opportunity for the trees to shed their leaves and nourish the ground, preparing the soil for a new awakening in the spring. How do you view this season of the year? Are the cycles of the earth an example of life cycles for us? Why does death have to be an ending, or is it? If we see the beauty in the close of a season in the earth’s cycle, could we also view the beauty of death in our own life cycle? Do we “nourish” the next generation? Does our death mean that our life has ended, or is it beginning anew? Death is not a topic we like to discuss or face until we are forced too. We all know it is coming, but it seems to be better dealt with at its time of impending arrival rather than today. I’m not an advocate for missing the beauty of this life while only focusing on what is to come, but I also don’t believe we should ignore the future and only plan for the here and now.

Autumn is a reminder to me that life has natural cycles, and it makes me want to enjoy the beauty of each day while preparing for the future. Assuming I get to live the average life expectancy in America in 2019, I can expect to enjoy 78.6 fall seasons. When I look at this numerical statistic, I realize how short this is in comparison to time. Rather than depressing me, this makes me see each moment of my life with more appreciation and encourages me not to waste time on trivial emotions or acts. It helps me prioritize my days and nudges me to use my time wisely, because I know my days are numbered. My prayer for each of you is that you are living the life you dreamed. That you are enjoying the simple moments and capturing all the experiences this life has in store for you. I pray that autumn brings joy to your soul and creates anticipation inside of you for the next season to arrive.

Your hopeful Innkeeper,

Jason

Wonderful post as always. To me autumn is the season of rest. Everything needs to go into some dormancy to be able to store enough energy for regrowth. Leaf drop seems like the healthy process of exfoliating. Autumn takes is a step further with the color we all look forward to. Enjoy?

We have stayed there several times and plan on it again. We come from ny to visit our daughter in Columbus. Have you ever considered building a treehouse lodging?
