Dining Out
By Joan DeMartin, Ohio Magazine, June 2004

Enjoying finely prepared American regional cuisine while simultaneously spotting your favorite bird species is a routine affair at The Inn at Honey Run. The inn lies deep in the heart of Ohio's Amish country between the villages of Millersburg and Berlin in Holmes County, not far from Mohican State Park. Because the dining room is enclosed by floor-to-ceiling windows and surrounded by forest, there truly is a "tree house effect" (as described in the inn's brochure), perfect for a relaxing meal and some sedate birding.

While our feathered friends dine at strategically placed feeders, patrons may select from a menu brimming with locally raised produce, meats and fish -- but don't expect traditional Amish-influenced fare at dinner. The former executive chef, Dickie Smith from Georgia, has trained two sous chefs, Matt McFadden and Cameron Krahel for the past year. Although Smith recently returned to her native state, the sous chefs (McFadden is now the executive chef) and some distinctly southern influences remain. Try the rainbow trout sautéed with lime juice and pecans or the wild salmon filet served over blue crab hash with a classic béarnaise for a hint of the South. For heartier fare, choose one of the fire-grilled, Black Angus steaks served with garlic mashed potatoes and sautéed green beans. Although the entrees include either a Caesar or house salad, start with the smoked salmon paté (really a light salmon salad) served with toast points, or grilled Portabella mushrooms with a balsamic vinaigrette.

For refreshing drinks, select from Sutter Home's nonalcoholic wines and sparkling juices, including fresh berry, apple, peach and citrus aromas. (The dining room does not serve alcohol in deference to local religious beliefs). And do let yourself and your dinner companions be tempted by the dessert options: "molten" chocolate cake with custard sauce, key lime pie with raspberry coulis, upside-down apple pie topped with cinnamon ice cream, and the fabulous Honey Run bread pudding with warm, orange caramel sauce, among others.

During the summer months, the Tree Top Café has a barbecue is every Saturday evening.
